This Oven Caramelized Onions Recipe is an easy, mostly hands off kitchen hack on how to caramelize onions in the oven!  Add mouthwatering flavor and take a dish from ordinary to extraordinary with these perfectly caramelized onions!(Scroll down for the detailed measurements and instructions in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the page.)

Oven Caramelized Onions Recipe

Yellow Onions (– thickly sliced (SEE NOTES))

Garlic (– smashed & peeled)

Thyme Sprigs

TBS Light Brown Sugar ((SEE NOTES))

TBS Olive Oil

Salt & Ground Black Pepper

Worcestershire Sauce (- optional)

TBS Balsamic Vinegar (- optional)

Preheat oven

Toss onions

Toss onions: Place onions, garlic and thyme on a large, rimmed sheet pan.  Sprinkle with brown sugar, drizzle with 5 tablespoons of oil and season generously with salt and pepper.  Toss everything together until evenly coated.

Cover and roast

Cover the pan with foil and roast in the oven for 25 minutes, tossing once halfway through cooking.  Remove foil and continue to cook for an additional 25-35 minutes, or until softened and golden in color, removing onions from the oven and tossing the onions 2-3 during cooking.  If you prefer a darker color, switch the oven to broil and broil for 5 minutes - watch the onions carefully as they can easily burn!!

Drizzle with sauce

Remove the pan from the oven and discard thyme sprigs (SEE NOTES).  Drizzle onions with Worcestershire sauce and/or Balsamic if using.  Toss to combine.

Serve

Serve: Taste and adjust for seasoning with salt and pepper.  Serve and enjoy!

In a large pot, sauté the diced red onion and minced garlic in 1 tablespoon of olive oil until translucent, about 5 minutes.

Add the water, green lentils, and salt to the large pot. Bring to a boil.

Cover with lid and simmer for 10 minutes.

To make the caramelized onions, heat a tablespoon of olive oil over low heat and add the onion slices, stirring occasionally until completely soft, dark brown, and caramelized.

NOTE: This will take about 30 minutes. The onions should become very dark and tacky when finished. Stir often to avoid burning.

Add the rice, cumin, cinnamon, and bayleaf to the lentils. Stir.

Cook covered for about 15 minutes, or until rice is cooked.

Serve lentils and rice topped with the caramelized onions, chopped fresh parsley, lemon wedges, and Greek yogurt if desired.

Generously salt fish and rinse under water to clean it. Set aside to dry.

Add oil to a pan and saute garlic over medium heat until lightly browned.

Layer onion on top, then the fish, evenly spaced.

Add the seasoning &amp; cooking liquid (&amp; optional chiles) and turn the heat to high until boiling. Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning.

Bring it to a simmer for ~20 minutes. Adjust seasoning if needed.

Gently flip the filets of fish over and simmer for a final ~10 minutes with the lid partially covered.

Stand there to watch it the final ~10 minutes to prevent it from burning! During this time you can continually spoon the sauce over the fish.

Add green onion during last 2 minutes to wilt &amp; top with sliced chiles, and some freshly ground black pepper.

Something magical happens when shallots and Swiss chard are sauteed and combined in a homemade creamy cheese sauce with pasta.

Creamy Pasta with Shallots and Swiss Chard

Before you begin making the sauce, cook the pasta and drain well.  Set the pasta aside.

Next, add two tablespoons of butter to a small skillet and over medium heat, melt the butter until it begins to bubble.  Stir in the panko and continue to stir.  Cook the panko until it turns a golden brown.  Remove from heat, stir in the chopped parsley and set aside.

In a large skillet, over medium heat, add the olive oil and shallots.  Saute the shallots until they are a light golden brown.

Add the Swiss chard and stir into the shallots.  Add half of the salt and half of the black pepper.  Stir to combine and cook until the chard is wilted.

Remove the shallots and onions from the skillet and transfer to a glass bowl.  Set aside.

In the same skillet, melt the butter on medium heat. Add the remaining salt and pepper and stir them into the sizzling butter. Next, add the flour and whisk until the flour is absorbed by the butter and the entire mixture turns an amber colour. This process is cooking off the flour taste and creating a roux.

Next, pour in the milk and whisk until thickened.

Set aside your whisk and get a large wooden spoon. Add the cheeses and stir until completely combined and the cheese is melted.

Add the cooked pasta and the shallot mixture; stir well into the cheese sauce. Once incorporated and fully heated through, plate and top with a sprinkling of the browned panko.

A twist on the classic apple tarte Tatin, Tom Colicchio's recipe uses roasted tomatoes in place of apples, and cuts the sweetness of the caramel by adding sherry vinegar.

Tom Colicchio's Caramelized Tomato Tart

Line a large plate with paper towels. Line a baking sheet with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper.

Pour the neutral oil into a medium saucepan and secure a deep-fry thermometer on the side. Set over medium-high heat and warm the oil to 325° F, being careful to maintain this temperature as you fry.

Carefully add the árbol chilies and fry, ladling oil over them constantly, until crisp, darkened in color, and shiny, 20–30 seconds. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the chilies to one side of the prepared plate. Add the anchovies to the pan and fry, stirring occasionally, until light golden brown and crispy, about 30 seconds. Transfer with a slotted spoon to the other side of the plate. Set aside and let cool.

Pinch the stems off the chilies and then, over a medium bowl, crush the chilies with your hands into pieces 1/3-inch or smaller. Add the chili flakes, salt, and peppercorns and mix to combine.

In a large saucepan over medium heat, combine the peanuts, sugar, and water and cook, stirring occasionally with a wooden spoon. The water will evaporate and the sugar will seize and become powdery and grainy, 10–12 minutes. At that moment, turn the heat to medium-low and keep cooking, stirring every minute or so, until the sugar melts and caramelizes to a dark blonde and the peanuts are evenly coated, 8–10 minutes more. If the mixture smokes at any point, take it off the heat for a few seconds and lower the heat before continuing. Remove from the heat and stir in the chili mixture.

Transfer the caramelized peanuts to the prepared baking sheet, spread into a single layer, and let cool, then break up pieces that are stuck together. Transfer the fried anchovies and caramelized peanuts to separate airtight containers and store at room temperature for up to 2 weeks. Serve the peanuts with the fried anchovies on top.

How to roast garlic in the oven whole and as individual cloves - for a caramelized, sweet, nutty, buttery smooth treat to spread over bread, add to soups and stews, mix into dips, and more.

How to Roast Garlic in the Oven (Whole Roasted Garlic + Cloves)

Preheat the oven to 400ºF/200ºC.

Slice the garlic head in half across the middle and place both halves onto a large piece of foil (large enough to wrap around both parts).

Drizzle the raw garlic with olive oil and lightly brush/rub it into the garlic cloves.

Seal the tin foil around the pieces to create a little &quot;parcel.&quot;It&#39;s best to loosely wrap the garlic to avoid the cloves touching the foil; otherwise, it can stick.

Roast in the oven for about 30 minutes (30-40 is the standard for most ovens). At this point, the garlic should be a golden color and super-soft to touch. You can try and piece and then continue roasting if it isn&#39;t quite at your preferred level.You can optionally unwrap the foil for the final five minutes to allow it to darken and caramelize further as the &quot;packet&quot; will essentially steam it. For even more caramelized results, reduce the heat to 350ºF/175ºC and roast for longer. I recommend checking every 10-or so minutes until it reaches your desired color/flavor.

Alternative whole roasted garlic method: Rather than slicing the garlic head in half, you can peel the outer, papery layers of the bulb (you should be able to see some individual cloves in their papery skin) then cut just about ½ inch from the top of the cloves, cutting away the papery ends, so the cloves are exposed. Then drizzle with oil and bake.To remove the roasted garlic cloves from the head, allow it to cool enough to touch, and simply squeeze them out.

Method 1: Whole Roasted Garlic

When roasting individual cloves, I use a similar method. Place the unpeeled cloves in a tin foil packet, drizzled with a bit of olive oil, then roast until tender. This will take less time – I recommend checking at the 15-minute mark, returning to the oven if needed, and checking every few minutes until ready.

Method 2: How to roast garlic cloves

Store: once roasted, I recommend removing the cloves from the head and storing them in an airtight container (or tightly wrapped- otherwise, they will become dry) for 3-5 days.Freeze: either freeze the roasted cloves as larger pieces or mash the roasted garlic first. Then transfer to a freezer-safe bag/container and freeze for up to 3 months. When freezing the mashed garlic, spread it in a thin layer in your bag and freeze flat. That way, you can simply snap off pieces as needed. Alternatively, freeze into a small ice-cube tray or teaspoon/tablespoon blobs. For the larger clove pieces, you can allow them 10-15 minutes at room temperature to thaw.Reheat: if you&#39;d like to reheat/soften the garlic once more, you can place it back in the oven at a low temperature for 10-15 minutes.

How to Store Roasted Garlic?

Thick and juicy hamburgers studded with sweet caramelized onions are sure to be the star of your cookout!

Caramelized Onion Hamburger Recipe

1.5 lb ground beef (preferably 85% chuck)

tbsp mayo

salt (divided)

garlic powder

¼ tsp black pepper

provolone cheese

Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add in the olive oil and butter. Toss in the diced onion and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 30 minutes, until the onions turn a deep, golden brown color. Remove from heat and set aside.

In a separate mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, mayo, 1 tsp seasoned salt, garlic powder, black pepper and caramelized onions. Use clean hands to combine the meat mixture and shape into 4 hamburger patties.

Season each side of the patties with the remaining seasoning salt and grill over medium-high heat, until cooked to desired temperature (about 3 to 5 minutes per side).

Just before removing from the grill, top with the provolone cheese and let melt slightly. Enjoy with your favorite burger toppings.

lemons (large, regular or Meyer Lemons)

7.2 oz caster sugar (1 cup)

Cut the lemons as thin as you can. Use a very sharp knife or a mandoline. I like to cut mine to approximately 1/8 inch in thickness.

In a large pan, add the water and sugar. Stir until the sugar is dissolved. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat.

Add the lemon slices in a single layer. Simmer for about 25 minutes. Flip the slices 1-2 times during the process. 

Place the lemon slices on a wire rack to dry (add parchment paper or wax paper under it to collect the syrup dripping). Dry for about 24 hours - until the slices are no longer sticky.

Rinse and dry the cherry tomatoes and place them in an oven-safe dish.In general, it&#39;s advised that you use non-reactive cookware when cooking acidic ingredients like tomatoes. That includes glass, ceramic, and stainless steel.

Drizzle the tomatoes with olive oil and sprinkle with a bit of salt and pepper.While you can technically remove the vines for roasting, I like to save that until after roasting as it helps them their shape more while roasting, AND they look great for presentation, too!

Roast the cherry tomatoes in the oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the tomatoes start to blister and are very tender. The time will vary slightly based on the size of tomatoes, the type of baking pan used, and your oven. It can take up to 40 minutes, in my experience.

I love to combine mine with high-quality extra virgin olive oil and use it as a bread dip.Freeze: freezing roasted cherry tomatoes is simple. Freeze either in a freezer-safe bag or freezer-safe airtight container for between 4-6 months. Then, allow them to thaw in the fridge or reheat from frozen.Reheat: you can reheat the cooked cherry tomatoes in the oven, microwave, or even on the stovetop. No matter which method you use, the tomatoes will soften and &quot;fall apart&quot;’ further into a sauce consistency – but still taste delicious!

Candied Orange Slices in Syrup (Caramelized Orange)

This is best done using a mandoline for thin, even slices. Aim for slices that are around 3-4mm thick.The slices need to be thick enough that they&#039;ll hold their shape but not too thick that they&#039;ll be hard to caramelize and take longer to dry.

In a large pot, add the sugar and water and heat over medium, stirring gently. Add the cardamom pods and the seeds from a vanilla pod to the syrup and bring to a soft boil.(Optional step): Check the FAQs in the blog post above for a top tip on preparing the orange slices, so the rind isn&#039;t as bitter (if you plan to keep the skin on the slices).

As soon as the mixture begins to boil, reduce the heat and add the orange slices to the pot. Allow the orange slices to simmer for between 30-45 minutes until the rinds start becoming slightly translucent. Occasionally turn the slices over (every 10-15 minutes) to make sure they&#039;re evenly soaking in the syrup.You can simmer them for up to an hour; however, I wanted to keep the syrup for other uses, and it evaporates and reduces more as it simmers, so I didn&#039;t.

At this point, you have two options:Store the candied orange slices in a jar with the leftover orange simple syrupOR

Allow the slices to dry for up to 48 hours (usually overnight is enough) in a single layer on a parchment-lined surface or cooling rack (with a tray for drips underneath). This will help the slices dry out and become perfectly chewy.You can also speed this process up using a dehydrator or oven (on the lowest heat).For less sticky slices, optionally cover them with a sprinkling of sugar.

Store or Dry

You can keep the prepared candied orange slices in syrup in an airtight jar in the fridge for between 3-4 weeks.Alternatively, if you plan to dry the pieces and roll them in sugar, these can be kept in an airtight container for between 2-3 months.
