An easy basic homemade salsa made in the blender. This is a family recipe that has been around for decades and is made in less than 5 minutes.

My Mama’s Basic Blender Salsa Recipe

green chilies

green onions,

garlic, roughly diced

jalapeño,

Salt and pepper (to taste)

Add to Blender

Add all ingredients into the blender. Pulse just a couple of times.  Be very careful not to purée (I didn’t say this was a soup).

Pour Into Dish

Pour into your preferred dish and serve with your favorite chips.

Fresh Homemade Salsa

tomatoes ((Roma work well), chopped)

red onion (, or sweet onion)

jalapeño peppers

cilantro

garlic

lime juice ((about 1 large lime))

cumin

Sea salt

Add all ingredients to the bowl of a food processor.

Pulse about 5-10 times, or just until the ingredients are finely diced, but stop before they're soupy.

Pour contents into a fine mesh strainer to remove excess liquid.&nbsp;

For best flavor, refrigerate at least 2-3 hours before serving

Keeps in the fridge for up to 1 week.

Fresh garden vegetables are cooked and processed in a hot water canning bath for delicious salsa to enjoy year round.

Homemade Salsa for Canning

tomatoes (diced)

onions (diced)

green bell pepper (diced)

jalapeno peppers (diced)

cilantro (chopped)

tbsp kosher salt

sugar

apple cider vinegar

Bring a large pot of water to a boil over high heat. While water is boiling, core tomatoes and score bottom of tomato with an X with a paring knife.

Blanch tomatoes by placing into hot water for 10-20 seconds. Remove tomato from hot water and immediately place in cold water.

Once the tomatoes have cooled enough, remove skins and seeds with membranes from tomatoes. Set aside to compost later.

Dice the meaty part of the tomato. You should have 9-½ cups of diced tomatoes for this recipe.

For the tomatoes

Add the onion, green peppers, garlic, jalapeno peppers, sugar (if using), cilantro, salt, and vinegar to a large stockpot with the tomatoes.

Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and cook the vegetable mixture for 15 minutes.

To make the salsa

While salsa is cooking, sterilize the canning jars and lids by placing in boiling hot water for 1 to 2 minutes.

Sterilize the canning jars and lids

Remove a jar from the hot water and hold with a towel. Place a canning funnel inside of the jar and scoop salsa into jar until salsa reaches the neck of the jar. Insert a canning spatula into the filled jar 3-4 times to help release any air bubbles.

Wipe the rim of the jar with a towel and place sterilized lid on jar and screw on cap tightly. Repeat with remaining salsa and canning jars.

To fill the canning jars

Place jars of salsa in a water bath canner filled with water until it just covers the top of the jars and bring it to a boil. Boil for 15 minutes. Remove from heat.

Lift rack in canner and set the rack handles on the edge, allowing the jars to cool gradually, about 15 minutes.

Carefully remove jars from the canner and place on a counter lined with kitchen towel.

Jars will pop and seal as they cool down. If once the jar has cooled, the seal pops back up, then the salsa must be placed in the fridge and used within 2 weeks or reprocessed.

Add olive oil to all the veggies (except cilantro and garlic). Place on the prepared grill and cook until there is a nice char and softness to them. Flip throughout.

Remove veggies and let cool slightly. Remove stems and seeds from vegetables (except jalapenos). Then place in a food processor, along with the cilantro, garlic, lime juice, and salt - and pulse carefully, or until it is processed but chunks remain. You may need to do this in two batches.

Enjoy immediately with chips, use on anything Tex-Mex, or chill and enjoy later.

Place tomatoes in mesh strainer over medium bowl. Sprinkle with salt, tossing gently to mix. Let stand 30 minutes. Meanwhile, mix remaining ingredients in large bowl. Set aside.

Place 1 1/2 cups of the tomatoes in food processor. Pulse just until smooth. Add pureed tomatoes to bowl with remaining ingredients. Add remaining tomatoes, stirring to mix well.

I made the salsa using whole (not canned) tomatoes and local Pueblo chilies. The consistency was just right by pulsing the tomatoes briefly in the blender. A couple of adjustments I will make next time around: add more salt. Canned tomatoes have salt as an ingredient, so the 1/2 teaspoon the recipe calls for may not be enough. Also, decide how hot you want your salsa to be. Mine was very hot because the Mirasol (Pueblo) chilies I used were hot. All in all, this recipe is flavorful and easy to make.

Very flavorful. But a little too much garlic. I also added lime juice and a little cilantro.
