Combine the sugar with 3/4 cup water in a small saucepan and bring to a simmer; stir until the sugar dissolves. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla and lemon juice. Refrigerate until cold.

Serve the syrup with seltzer over ice (3 to 4 tablespoons per 8 ounces of seltzer.) The syrup keeps refrigerated in an airtight container up to 2 weeks.

Made a few small adjustments...<div><br /></div><div>Swapped vanilla for butter vanilla extract and caramel extract... (be generous)</div><div><br /></div><div>Swapped seltzer water for cold water, added 3 grams of baking soda to set off the lemon juice (or citric acid) and make it fizzy...</div><div><br /></div><div>Bottled in clean Ramune bottles...  hint: add baking soda to the bottle last. Then seal and flip!</div><div><br /></div><div>Butterbeer Ramune!</div>

Lime Berry Soda

For the simple syrup: Add the berries, sugar and 1/2 cup water to a small saucepan. Heat over medium heat until the berries have released their juices and the sugar is dissolved, about 5 minutes. Use a fine mesh strainer to strain the liquid into a jar. Cool to room temperature before using.

For the lime berry soda: Fill a 12-ounce glass with ice. Top with 1 ounce berry syrup and the sparkling water (save the remaining berry syrup for another use). Stir to combine. Garnish with the lime wedge and mint sprig.

Limeade and Mint Soda

Combine the sugar with 1 cup water in a medium saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium-high heat, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Turn off the heat and add the mint leaves. Muddle with a muddler or the back of a spoon. Allow to cool completely, about 20 minutes. Strain and discard the mint leaves.

Add the lime juice and 4 cups water to a large pitcher. Pour the simple syrup into the limeade. Stir to combine.

To serve, pour the limeade into glasses filled with ice. Top with some sparkling water. Garnish each with a lime round and mint sprig.

I accidentally picked up lemon juice instead of lime. Doubled the simple sugar and yummy! Light and refreshing. Would be extra nice with some rum. ;-)

Waaay too sour This gave me digestive issues after just 3 sips! I even tried adding another full mint simple sugar concoction... still so sour

Valerie's Limeade and Soda

Cherry-Almond Soda

sour cherry juice

almond extract

Combine 1 cup sour cherry juice, 3/4 cup sugar and 1/2 cup water in a medium skillet; cook over medium-high heat until syrupy, about 15 minutes. Stir in 1 teaspoon almond extract; let cool. Add seltzer.

For each drink, combine 2 to 4 tablespoons flavored syrup with 1 cup cold seltzer in an ice-filled glass.

Root Beer Pulled Pork

pork shoulder,

salt

black pepper

canola oil

root beer

Day 1: Put the pork cubes in a casserole dish or baking sheet and rub them evenly with the salt and pepper. Cover in plastic and refrigerate for at least 12 hours.

Day 2: Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F.

Heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Sear the pork until golden brown on all sides; transfer to a good-quality, high-walled braising pan and pour in the root beer. Cover the braising pan with parchment paper and then aluminum foil.

Place the pan in the oven and set a timer for 1 hour. When the timer goes off, lower the heat to 275 degrees F. Cook for another 2 hours. When the timer goes off again, check the pork to make sure it pulls apart easily. Stick a fork in it and twist--if it pulls apart easily, you're good to go!

Let rest for about 30 minutes. Once cooled, take the pork out of the braising liquid and pull it for sandwiches.

Did with a porkbutt. Kosher salt and cracked pepper on all sides. Seared on all sides with olive oil instead. Did in a dutchoven...pull apart tender. Yumm!!!<br />
