Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease an 8-inch square pan with oil.

In a medium bowl, whisk the cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt until combined.

In a separate bowl, stir the milk, oil, and egg until well-blended.

Pour the wet ingredients into the flour mixture and stir until combined. Pour the batter into the greased pan.

Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the surface has browned slightly, and a toothpick inserted into the center of the cornbread comes out clean.
