Step 1
Pat dry the tofu with a paper towel to remove excess water, then cut it lengthwise into 4 slices.
Step 2
Prepare the breading: place the flour onto a shallow plate. In a deep plate, mix mayonnaise and water until combined. In a third plate, combine breadcrumbs and spices, and mix well.
Step 3
Place a tofu slice into the flour coat on each side, then dip it into the mayonnaise and water mixture on both sides and finally roll it in the breadcrumbs. Repeat for all four tofu slices.Now they are ready to be fried! You can either fry them in oil or in an air fryer:

OIL FRYING METHOD: Heat a large frying pan and add enough oil to cover the bottom of the pan. To check if the oil is hot enough, you can use a wooden cooking spoon - if bubbles form around it it’s ready. Or drop a little batter into the oil, and it should immediately float to the top.
Step 5
Gently place the breaded tofu slices into the hot oil and fry them for a few minutes on each side until golden brown. Remove the fried tofu from the oil and place it on a paper towel to absorb any excess oil. Repeat with all tofu steaks.
Step 6
AIR FRYER METHOD: Preheat your air fryer to around 375°F (190°C). Give a light spritz of oil to the breaded steaks, then place them in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Avoid overcrowding to allow proper air circulation. Cook for approximately 15-20 minutes, flipping halfway through the cooking time.
Step 7
Serve hot, optionally with cooked rice and stir-fried vegetables in sesame sauce.
