This chicken lo mein recipe is surprisingly easy to make at home, and it actually tastes a lot better than what you can get at most takeout restaurants.

Restaurant-Style Chicken Lo Mein

In a medium bowl, combine the chicken with 2 teaspoons each of cornstarch, water, and oil. In a wok over high heat, add 2 tablespoons oil, and sear the chicken for a couple minutes until browned. Remove from the wok, and set aside.

Add another couple tablespoons of oil to the wok, and add the garlic. After 10 seconds, add the cabbage and carrots. Stir-fry on high heat for a minute and add the wine in a circle around the perimeter of the wok.

Add the noodles and chicken back to the wok and mix well from the bottom up for about 30 seconds. If the noodles aren't coming apart, add about 1/4 cup water to the noodles to loosen them up a bit.

Then cover the wok for one minute. Remove the cover and add the soy sauce, dark soy sauce, sesame oil, salt, and sugar. Stir-fry for 30 seconds, and add the bean sprouts and scallions. Stir-fry for one more minute and serve.

Sauce: Mix cornflour and dark soy until lump free, then add remaining Sauce ingredients.

Season Chicken: Transfer 2 tsp Sauce into bowl with chicken. Toss to coat.

Heat oil in a wok or large heavy based skillet over high heat until smoking.

Add onion and garlic, stir 30 seconds.

Add chicken, stir until white on the outside, still raw inside - 1 minute.

Add carrot and capsicum/bell peppers, cook 2 minutes or until chicken is cooked.

Add noodles, Sauce and water. Use 2 wooden spoons and toss for 30 seconds.

Add green onions, toss for another 1 minute until all the noodles are slick with sauce.

Serve immediately, garnished with extra green onions if using.

In a small bowl, season chicken with a teaspoon each of hoisin sauce, sesame oil, and soy sauce. Then, place a tablespoon of olive oil in a large wok over medium high heat. Carefully add chicken with tongs and cook for 5-7 minutes, or until cooked through, with an internal temperature of 165°F. Remove chicken and set aside.

In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the sauce ingredients: brown sugar, hoisin sauce, soy sauce, sesame oil, and rice vinegar. Set aside.

Meanwhile, boil water in a medium pot over high heat. Add lo mein noodles and cook according to package directions, around 6 minutes (al dente). Drain and set aside.

Add olive oil to the wok over medium-high heat. Add minced garlic and ginger purée until aromatic. Add vegetables. Stir and cook for around 5-7 minutes, or until cooked as desired.

Make the sauce

Start by boiling water in a large pot if you&#039;re using raw or dried noodles. Next, combine all the ingredients for the sauce in a medium size bowl and stir together until the sugar dissolves.

Marinate the chicken

Add one tablespoon of the sauce to the chicken to use as a marinade. Let the chicken marinate while prepping the vegetables.

Cook the noodles

If using raw egg noodles, boil for 2 minutes or until al dente. If using dried noodles, boil them one minute less than the package instructions state. The noodles should be al dente and not overcooked.Drain and rinse the noodles under running water and then drizzle a tiny amount of oil on them to prevent them from sticking together. Note: the yellow egg noodles I used in the photo came pre-cooked. Simple rinse them under hot water to separate the strands.

Heat a wok or pan to medium high heat and add the oil. Cook the chicken until fully cooked and then remove it from the pan and set it aside.

Stir fry the vegetables

Add the vegetables to your pan and stir fry together for 2 to 3 minutes or until tender but still crisp.

Add the noodles and sauce

Add the noodles and sauce to the pan and toss everything together for 1 minute. The sauce should become shiny, glossy, and thick. Make sure the sauce coats all the noodles.

Add the chicken and scallions

Add the cooked chicken and chopped scallions to the pan and toss it once more to combine.

This chicken lo mein recipe is easy to make with savory noodles tossed in a flavorful sauce with chicken and vegetables. (And it&#039;s better than takeout!)

½ cups mixed stir fry vegetables (see notes)

lo mein noodles (see notes)

chicken broth

¼ tsp ground ginger

red pepper flakes (optional)

Add the sauce ingredients to a large measuring cup with a spout and stir stir until well combined. Transfer ¼ cup of it to a medium bowl.

Optional: Cover the chicken with saran wrap and tenderize each side with a meat mallet.

Pat the chicken dry and season with salt and pepper. Cut into bite-sized pieces.

Add the chicken to the bowl with the ¼ cup of sauce and use kitchen tongs to toss and coat. Let it sit while you cut the vegetables and begin boiling salted water for the lo mein.

Prep Work

Once all ingredients are measured and ready, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chicken and let it sear, undisturbed, for about 3 minutes. Toss and allow the other sides to cook through and turn golden, about 2-3 more minutes. Remove and set aside.

Add the wine to the same skillet that you used to cook the chicken over medium heat. Use a silicone spatula to “clean” the bottom and sides of the skillet, this will add flavor to the sauce. Let it bubble and reduce by half, about 2 minutes.

Add the lo mein noodles to the boiling water. Boil them for 1 minute less than al dente according to package instructions. (Set a timer to ensure you don’t overcook it.) Drain once cooked.

While the noodles cook, add the vegetables to the skillet (and a little more oil if needed) and cook for about 3 minutes to soften slightly. Add the sauce and bring it to a boil, then reduce heat to low.

Use kitchen tongs to add the cooked lo mein a bit at a time, until desired noodle-to-sauce- ratio is obtained. (I use about 8 oz. instead of 10 oz.) Important: The noodles will continue to absorb the sauce and the flavors will continue to meld as it stands.

Add the chicken back to the skillet and toss to coat. Heat through for 1-2 minutes.

Garnish with your favorite toppings (see notes for suggestions) and serve!

In a small bowl, whisk together your garlic, brown sugar, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, ground ginger, red pepper flakes, and pepper.

Add your cooked noodles to the skillet with your chicken and vegetables. Pour your sauce mixture over the skillet and toss to coat, sauteing everything together until your sauce thickens and everything has come together, about 5-8 minutes.
