Ingredients to make banana pudding are taken.

Caramelize the banana: To a shallow fry pan, add 2 sliced banana and sprinkle 3 tbs of sugar.

Over a low-medium heat, Fry the banana for 3 to 5 mins till the sugar melts and turns to a nice golden color.(gently flip the bananas not to mash them) Collect the caramelized banana on a small plate and set aside until we use it.

To make custard sauce: To a saucepan, add 1/2 cup sugar and 1Tbsflour. Whisk lightly. Add 1.5 cups of milk and 1/2 cups of condensed milk.

Place the saucepan over medium heat. Stir the mixture for 8 to 10 mins till it slightly thickens.

Whisk egg yolk: To a small mixing bowl whisk 2 egg yolks until it turns to a pale yellow color.

Pour the custard sauce: Now to the beaten egg yolks, add the custard and beat for 2 mins.

Back to heat: Pour the custard mixture to a saucepan and stir over medium heat for 3 mins till the custard is thickened.
The custard should coat the back of the spatula.

Off from the heat, mix in vanilla essence and butte.

To assemble: to a baking dish or any type of serving glass, first sprinkle some crushed biscuits, add a layer of caramelized banana, pour in the custard.

Repeat the layers: crumbled biscuits, caramelized banana, and custard sauce.

Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 2 hours.

Before serving: sprinkle some crushed biscuits over the pudding and serve.

Make the instant pudding according to the pudding mixture instructions and set it aside in the refrigerator.

In a medium-sized bowl, mix the whipped topping and cream cheese and set aside.

Line the bottom and sides of a 9×13 baking pan with Nilla Wafer cookies.

Add a layer of banana slices over the Nilla Wafers.

Using a small spatula, spread the vanilla pudding evenly over the bananas.

Add a layer of the whipped topping and cream cheese mixture over the layer of pudding.

Sprinkle the ¼ cup of crumbled cookies all over the top layer of whipped cream.

Allow the banana pudding to chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours.

Slice bananas in about 1/3 inch thick rounds. Place four glasses that hold about 2 cups each on your work surface.*

Add about four vanilla wafers to each glass. If necessary, snap them in half to create an even layer. Top with 4 or 5 slices of banana.

Spoon about 1/4 cup of pudding over the bananas. Repeat the layering process a second and a third time. Serve!

Definitely make your own pudding! It really isn't hard. 
Maybe this is just a personal preference, but it doesn't taste like banana pudding to me until the next day. The vanilla wafers certainly aren't crunchy at that point, but the flavors are melded and it's less runny. I didn't do the citrus juice trick and the bananas were still fine the next day (they weren't crazy ripe to begin with, and I made sure none of the slices were exposed to air).

This was great - I made the vanilla pudding and it was so easy and delicious and assembly of the banana pudding was VERY easy.  Made for a great dessert with minimal effort. Yum!

Chill: Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.

Serve: Top with whipped cream, extra banana slices, and vanilla wafers.
