S.O.S. also known as Creamy Hamburger Gravy is an old-school meal. This is a classic, simple and tasty meal that is reminiscent of military cooking!

S.O.S. (CREAMY HAMBURGER GRAVY)

beef

milk, (2%

tbsp salted butter

tbsp all-purpose flour

salt

pepper

bread (toasted)

In a medium sauce pan over medium high heat, brown the ground beef. Season with a little salt and pepper. Drain excess grease and set aside. Melt butter in the same sauce pan. Add flour and stir until butter/flour mixture is bubbly.

Add milk, salt, and pepper.&nbsp;Stir constantly until thick and bubbly.&nbsp;Add meat and stir. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed (I usually like a bit more pepper).&nbsp;If necessary, add a little more milk until it reaches your desired consistency.

Serve over toast.

Note: this is the exact same recipe I use for sausage gravy. Instead of ground beef, I substitute with hot, ground breakfast sausage.

Heat a medium to large skillet over medium...

Heat a medium to large skillet over medium heat; add the ground beef, diced onion and seasonings. Break up the meat as it browns and cook until no longer pink. Do no drain.

Next, add the flour and stir to incorporate...

Next, add the flour and stir to incorporate into the beef mixture. Continue to cook while stirring for 2-3 minutes then add the milk. Gently stir to combine and bring to a simmer; cook until gravy is thickened.

Taste for seasoning and adjust if needed.

In large skillet, cook ground beef and onion over medium-high heat until beef is thoroughly cooked, stirring frequently.

Stir in flour, bouillon and steak sauce. Gradually stir in milk. Cook and stir 4 to 6 minutes or until mixture boils and thickens, stirring frequently. If desired, serve over mashed potatoes or cooked rice.

Old fashioned hamburger gravy is a Midwest American staple that is very satisfying and can go from the kitchen to the dinner table in less than half an hour. It is the perfect comfort food to make after a long day.

Brown the ground beef in a large skillet over medium high heat. Cook, crumbling into small pieces. Add the onion and garlic halfway through and cook until softened, about 4-5 minutes.

Add the Worcestershire sauce, pepper, thyme, bay leaf and flour. Stir and cook for 2 minutes.

Gradually add the beef broth and beef bouillon, followed by the half and half. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook  until gravy is thickened, about 5-10 minutes. Taste and adjust seasonings, as needed.

Serve over mashed potatoes, biscuits, bread, egg noodles or steamed rice.

This was so easy to make and it was delicious!  I used half and half in place of the milk and added mushrooms and peas and served on mashed potatoes.  Next time, I think I’ll serve it on egg noodles so it isn’t quite so heavy.  This is a great comfort food recipe!

Yes, I tried it using the powder substitute for the Onion and Garlic and it seemed perfect. I think it tasted like the Hamburger Gravy my mom used to make back in the 70's. It seems like it was the first homemade tasting meal I've had since then. Thank You!

My mother used to make a variation of this recipe when I was growing up. Swap in Ground turkey to make it more lean. Milk can be substituted with water. Goes well over rice and pairs well with steamed veggies. Super quick, easy and cheap to make.
