Translating literally as &ldquo;a thousand leaves&rdquo;, this world-famous French dessert consists of three components: puff pastry, pastry cream or whipped cream, and a glaze or a fondant. The delicate puff pastry is first rolled and trimmed to fit the desired shape, and once baked, both sides of the pastry are lightly dusted with powdered sugar and quickly caramelized&nbsp;under a broiler for extra crunch. The finished&nbsp;pastry is then cut into three strips, which are layered with either pastry cream or&nbsp;whipped cream, and sometimes fruit may be added as well. The top of the assembled cake can be sprinkled with powdered sugar or glazed with a signature icing consisting of alternating white and brown stripes.

Consisting of layers of chocolate sponge cake, whipped cream, and cherries soaked in kirsch brandy, the famous Black Forest cake (Schwarzw&auml;lder kirschtorte) is one of the best-known German desserts. A special type of cherry brandy from the Black Forest region, kirschwasser, is used to soak&nbsp;the cherries, moisten the layers of&nbsp;chocolate sponge cake, and flavor the whipped cream. The assembled cake is heavily decorated with the remaining whipped cream and chocolate shavings, and is topped with fresh or glaced cherries. Traditionally, however, the Black Forest cake may also&nbsp;have a base made of shortcrust pastry that acts not only as a base but also as a contrasting texture to the softness of the entire cake. Buttercream can sometimes be used instead of whipped cream or combined with it, while the sponge cake, either G&eacute;noise or Viennese sponge cake, can be baked in three or four tins or just in one and then cut up in layers. Because the cake is heavily flavored with kirsch, a slice of it is usually served only with coffee or a well-chilled kirsch.

An elegant vodka-based drink that'll wow your guests - it's made with creamy advocaat liqueur and homemade fruit syrup

Rhubarb & custard cocktail

To make the rhubarb syrup, put the caster sugar in a saucepan with 75ml water. Heat very gently, so the sugar disappears but the water doesn&rsquo;t bubble. Tip in the chopped rhubarb, cover with a tight-fitting lid and increase the heat a little so it begins to boil. Simmer, covered, for about 5 mins until the rhubarb is very tender but not disintegrating.

Turn off the heat, and tip the pan&rsquo;s contents into a fine sieve over a bowl. Use a wooden spoon to gently squeeze the rhubarb so that you get all the juices, but no pulp. Tip back into the pan and boil rapidly for a few mins until just syrupy. Pour into a jug &ndash; you should have about 125ml. Leave to cool completely. Any leftovers will keep in the fridge for up to 1 month.

Chill 4 cocktail glasses with ice or in your freezer. Shake the vodka and 100ml of the rhubarb syrup together with ice until mixed and chilled down. Make small shreds of rhubarb using a vegetable peeler and place into iced water &ndash; this will make them curl up.

In a separate jug, whisk together the advocaat and lemonade with more ice to lighten. Divide the vodka and rhubarb mixture between the glasses, straining through a small sieve to catch the ice.

Carefully pour 25ml of your advocaat mixture into each glass over an upsidedown spoon (the mixture should float on the surface of the vodka syrup mixture). Drain the rhubarb shreds well and use to garnish your cocktails.

This quintessential summer pie consists of nothing more than a blueberry filling enclosed in a pastry shell. Recipes vary in the amount and type of ingredients added to the filling, as well as the type of pie crust used. It is not uncommon to see a single-crust blueberry pie, or one that has a double crust with a lattice top. The blueberry filling is traditionally thickened with flour, however most modern recipes use cornstarch or tapioca flour instead. The pie can be served either cold or warm, typically with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream and a few fresh blueberries.

Preheat oven to 375°.

Combine the softened cream cheese, sour cream, garlic powder, oregano, basil, and red pepper flakes. Ideally, the sour cream shouldn’t be cold when it goes into the oven to maintain a smooth consistency. Spread on the bottom of a 9-inch pie plate, baking pan, or cast iron skillet.

Spread 1 cup of marinara sauce on top, then add the Parmesan and Mozzarella cheese.

Add pepperoni or desired pizza toppings.

Bake uncovered for 25-30 minutes, until the top begins to brown.

Optional: Garnish with additional red pepper flakes, freshly ground pepper, and roughly chopped parsley.

Serve with crusty bread, pita/tortilla/bagel chips, or vegetables.

It combines the hazelnut and almond meringue and an aromatic dried apricot filling. Take into account that you need to start the preparations ahead of time as the apricots need to soak for at least a few hours, but ideally overnight. The recipe calls for raw yolks, but if it's going to be eaten by pregnant women, kids, the elderly, or someone wary of getting salmonella poisoning, use pasteurized egg yolks.
