No cornstarch needed to make this deliciously crispy tofu recipe! This vegan air fried tofu tastes like it's straight from the deep fryer (while being way lower in fat).

Crispy Air Fried Tofu

16-oz block extra-firm tofu (453 g)

Tbsp soy sauce (30 mL)

Tbsp toasted sesame oil* (15 mL)

olive oil (15 mL)

garlic (minced)

Press: Press tofu for at least 15 minutes, using either a or by setting a heavy pan on top of it, letting the moisture drain. When finished, cut tofu into bite-sized blocks and transfer to a bowl.

Flavor: Combine all remaining ingredients in a small bowl. Drizzle over tofu and toss to coat. Let tofu marinate for an additional 15 minutes.

AirFry: Preheat your air fryer to 375 degrees F (190 C). Add tofu blocks to your air fryer basket in a single layer. Cook for 10 to 15 minutes, shaking the pan occasionally to promote even cooking.

Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside and perfect for dipping. Make in the air fryer or in the oven at a high temperature.

Vegan Air-Fried Tofu Nuggets (oil-free)

Cut the tofu into bite size cubes and then use a bowl or bag and shake it with the spices.

Add into the air fryer and cook for 10-15 minutes at 400 degrees F, shaking halfway through. For the oven route, bake at 475 on a baking sheet with parchment for 15 minutes on each side or until desired crispiness.

Serve with dipping sauce and enjoy fresh!

Using an air fryer makes this savory tofu crispy in record time, but if you don't have one, see the notes for baking in an oven or toaster oven. Also, the longer you marinate, the tastier the tofu will be, so start it soaking early for the best flavor.

Air Fried Tofu Italian Style

extra-firm tofu

soy sauce or tamari (gluten-free, if necessary)

aquafaba or broth ((see notes))

Drain the tofu and cut it into three slices lengthwise. Put down a double layer of tea towels or paper towels, place the tofu slices on top, and cover with more towels. Place your hands over the tofu slices and press down, gently increasing pressure, to press enough water out that the towels are noticeably wet. (You can also use a tofu press for this, of course.)

Return the tofu to the cutting board and cut each piece into about 10 cubes (one cut down the length and then 5 across works well.) Place the tofu in a large ziplock bag or bowl.

Mix the remaining ingredients well. Pour over the tofu and gently turn the bag or stir the tofu until all sides are coated. Let it marinate at least 10 minutes--the longer you marinate it, the more flavorful it will be.

Preheat your air fryer at 390-400F for about 3 minutes. Place the tofu in a single layer in the basket (leaving any marinade behind) and immediately reduce the temperature to around 350F. Air fry for 6 minutes. Use a thin, flexible spatula to loosen the tofu and turn it. Return it to the air fryer and begin checking at 4 minutes to see if it is golden overall and slightly darker at the edges but not overcooked or it will be tough.

Use any way you like--my preference is in wraps with plenty of veggies and balsamic vinaigrette--but it's also good in pasta.

How to Make Crispy Air Fryer Tofu

In a medium size bowl place the pressed and cubed tofu. Add in liquid aminos and toss to coat. Add in all of the other seasoning ingredients and toss to thoroughly combine.

Place in your air fryer in a single row, so that all the tofu has a little bit of space around each piece. Set your air fryer to 400 degrees F. Cook for 10 minutes, shaking the basket after 5 minutes, then continuing to cook. 

Remove after tofu is cooked. Allow to cool for a few minutes then serve. Enjoy!

Remove the tofu from the package and drain off the excess water. Wrap in a towel to remove the liquid. If you want ultra crispy tofu, press it for about 20 minutes with a heavy object. I skip this step most of the time with no issues :)

Cut into 1 inch cubes and toss with the soy sauce. In a small dish, whisk together the corn starch, paprika and garlic powder. Add to the tofu and toss to combine.

Toss in the breadcrumbs until well coated.

Spray your air fryer basket (OR use a parchment liner to make clean up easy! these have holes in them to keep the cooking process the same) and add in the tofu in a single layer. Set the air fryer to 375 Fahrenheit and set the timer for 15 minutes. Remove the basket and shake every 5 minutes to ensure nothing sticks and everything cooks evenly. At the 15 minute mark, check the tofu. It will be quite crispy at this point, so stop it now if it is done enough for you, but I sometimes give it a few extra minutes if I want it ultra crispy.

While the tofu is cooking, add the minced garlic and sesame oil to a small pot. Saute until lightly golden brown.

Add in all remaining sauce ingredients and whisk really well. let simmer over low heat until thick. If after 5 or so minutes it isn&#039;t thickening, whisk in an extra tablespoon of cornstarch.

When both the tofu and sauce are done, let cool for about 5 minutes, then transfer the tofu to a large bowl and toss with the sauce. Serve immediately and enjoy with rice &amp; veggies or just as is.

Set tofu between folded paper towels (on top and on bottom) and place a heavy wood cutting board or pan on top. This will help press out liquid. Allow it to sit for 20 minutes, changing the paper towel halfway through if necessary.

As tofu sits to dry, combine marinade ingredients. Mixing the soy sauce, sesame oil, honey, chili with garlic sauce and oil together with either a whisk or by shaking it in a mason jar (with lid) to emulsify. Set aside.

Once tofu has most of the liquid pressed out, cut it with a sharp knife into bite-sized pieces by first cutting your block into 3 or 4 strips and then cutting those into squares or rectangles.

Place tofu pieces  into a shallow dish, pour marinade over them and use chopsticks or small tongs to turn them to ensure even coating. Allow them to sit for 10 minutes (or up to 30 minutes).

Air fryers vary, if yours has a preheat option set it for 4-5 minutes. If it does not, just start it empty and let it run for 3-4 minutes at 350. Then carefully place your tofu (using tongs) into the basket, you don&#039;t want them touching one-another. allow space between each for the air to circulate. (You will most likley be making two batches, depending on the size of your air fryer). Set your air fryer to 400 degrees F and set the timer for 13 minutes.

Halfway through the cooking process, gently and quickly turn your tofu.

Remove from air fryer, plate and if you wish, drizzle with just a bit of honey. Garnish with scallions, cilantro or parsley and enjoy! Serves 4 as an appetizer or two as an entree.

Air Fryer Tofu

Remove the tofu from the package and drain. With your hands, gently squeeze out as much water as you can without breaking or crushing the block. Lay the tofu flat on a cutting board so the longer edge is towards you, then cut it into four strips. Rotate the strips so that the wider (cut sides) are flat against the cutting board and cut them in half again those you have 8 strips total. Cut the strips crosswise into cubes that are about 1 inch in size (I end up with 5 cubes per strip).

Press

Line a cutting board or large plate with a clean tea towel (or similar lint-free kitchen towel) or paper towels. Spread the tofu cubes onto it in one layer and lay a second towel on top. Press gently but firmly and change out the towel as needed. The idea is to remove as much water from the tofu as possible.

Stir

In a small bowl or large liquid measuring cup, stir together the soy sauce, vinegar, syrup, oil, garlic powder, ginger, and hot sauce.

Toss

Place the tofu in a shallow baking dish or medium mixing bowl. Pour the soy sauce mixture over the tofu, then with your hand, toss gently to combine. Let the tofu sit for 15 minutes, tossing it again halfway through. Don’t worry if a few bits crumble. Those will turn deliciously crispy.

Preheat

If you’d like to keep the tofu warm between batches, preheat your oven to 250 degrees F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees F according to the manufacturer’s instructions (for my air fryer, that is 3 minutes of preheat time).

Just before cooking, sprinkle the corn starch evenly over the top of the tofu and toss to coat.

Coat the basket of the air fryer with nonstick spray. Add the tofu in one layer, leaving a little space around the cubes so that they do not touch and the air can circulate (depending upon the size of your air fryer, you may need to cook it in two or three batches).

Cook

Cook the tofu for 9 minutes, slide the basket out and shake it gently to toss the tofu, then continue cook for 2 to 4 additional minutes, tossing and checking it each minute, until the tofu is crisp and dark golden (the time will vary based on your air fryer; keep a close eye on it towards the end to make sure it doesn’t burn). If desired, transfer the tofu to the baking sheet and keep warm in the oven while you finish the rest.

Repeat with remaining tofu, discarding any excess marinade (if you have some crumbled bits of tofu in the bottom of the bowl, you can air fry those too). Enjoy!

This simple recipe is almost too easy to write down! With a crispy exterior and soft inside, this air fried tofu is perfect to snack on, enjoy with a sauce/dip, or add to any recipe. Enjoy!

Wrap drained tofu in tea towel or paper towel.

Place wrapped tofu on plate to catch water.

Place a heavy pan on top of the wrapped tofu, like a cast iron skillet or a pot filled with food cans. Let sit for at least 30 minutes (up to 2 hours) to press tofu.

Unwrap tofu*. Cut into desired shape (we prefer 1 inch cubes or flatter 2 inch squares).

Place tofu cubes in air fryer. Sprinkle with sea salt.

Close air fryer. Set air fryer to 390 degrees for 16 minutes, opening to shake/move tofu cubes every 5 minutes to cook pieces evenly.

After 5 minutes it starts to brown.

At 10 minutes the tofu starts to crisp and brown some more.

At 16 minutes, tofu will be crisp on the outside and soft inside.

Air Fried Tofu is crispy, flavorful, and a perfect way to enjoy the ingredient. It is easy to make and very satisfying to eat.

Press tofu by placing it underweight for 15 to 20 minutes. cut tofu into small cubes

In a bowl, add tamari, olive oil, nutritional yeast, garlic powder, and paprika. Mix well and add tofu cubes. Toss so that the mixture covers the tofu pieces.

Brush the air fryer basket or pan with oil. 

Place the tofu pieces on an air fryer basket and air fry for about 15 minutes at 375 degrees F. Turn the tofu halfway into the cook.

Place the tofu slabs on a wire rack set inside a rimmed baking sheet. Season both sides with the salt and pepper and allow to sit out or chill for an hour.

Combine all of the dry ingredients together in a medium-sized bowl. Set aside.

Combine all of the wet ingredients together in a separate medium-sized bowl. Set aside.

Working one piece at a time, coat the tofu evenly in the dry mixture, tapping off any extra and placing it back onto the wire rack.

Pour 3 tablespoons of the wet mixture into the dry mixture and combine with your hands.
