Homemade molasses baked beans are a year-round family favourite! Soak dried beans in the morning, boil in the evening, and bake with pantry staples overnight.

(454 g) dried white navy beans

(1-1/2 L) cold water

Place the dried navy beans in a 4-quart (4 L) Dutch oven. Cover the beans with cold water and let them soak for eight hours.

Drain and rinse the beans with cool water....

Drain and rinse the beans with cool water. Place the drained beans back in the pot and cover them with 6 cups of fresh cold water. Bring the beans to a boil over medium-high heat then add the baking soda. Reduce the heat, place the lid on the pot, and simmer the beans for 30 minutes until tender.

Our absolute favorite baked beans recipe! They are syrupy and loaded with flavors of BBQ sauce, dijon, smoked paprika and chipotle. Delish!

Favorite Baked Beans

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

Heat a large (oven safe, if you don’t want to transfer) skillet over medium-low heat and add the bacon. Cook until it’s brown and crisp and most of the fat is rendered.

Stit in the onion, pepper and garlic. Cook, stirring often, until everything softens, about 5 minutes. Stir in the paprika, chili powder, salt and pepper. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes. Stir in the vinegar, BBQ sauce, ketchup, mustard and brown sugar until combined.

Stir in the baked beans directly from the can. Bring the mixture to a boil, then turn off the heat. I suggest tasting the beans here and adding more salt, pepper or heat if desired. If you&#039;d like, you can lay a few strips of bacon on top of the beans here too!

Place the skillet (or transfer to an oven-safe dish) in the oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until bubbly and syrup. Remove and let cool slightly before serving.

You can make these ahead of time - cook them in the skillet then let cook to room temperature and cover, placing in the fridge. Bake the next day (or whenever you’re ready!).

Recipe video above. This is seriously so similar to Heinz, it&#039;s scary! Except - no artifical flavouring, and the sauce isn&#039;t slimy which I really hate about canned baked beans. Make with DRIED or CANNED beans. Navy beans / haricot, if you can find them (that&#039;s what Heinz uses) otherwises any beans (preferably white).

Homemade Heinz Baked Beans

(14 oz) dried Navy beans (aka Haricot) or other white beans

harricot/navy

chicken stock/broth ((low sodium), veg also ok)

water

Worcestershire sauce

ketchup tomato sauce ((Note 2))

tomato paste

garlic powder ((or more onion powder))

tsp onion powder ((or more garlic powder))

tsp black pepper

cornstarch

Soak beans in a big bowl of water for 8 - 24 hrs, then drain.

Skim foam - Place beans in a large pot of water over high heat. Bring to a simmer, then skim off foam.

Simmer Reduce heat so it&#039;s simmering gently (medium or medium low). Partially cover with lid (leaving a crack for steam to escape), then cook for 1 - 1.5 hrs until just tender. (Start checking at 45 min). Beans should be still slightly firm on inside (they&#039;re cooked more in the sauce). Drain, use per recipe.

Cook dried beans:

Mix - Place all Baked Beans ingredients in a pot (except beans) and stir, then add beans.

Simmer - Bring to a simmer, then lower heat to medium low and simmer for 20 minutes, without the lid. Stir every now and then so the beans don&#039;t catch on the bottom of the pot.

Baked Beans:

Mix cornflour with water. Pour into pot while stirring, then cook for 2 minutes until sauce thickens - it will thicken quickly. (Note 3)

Check for salt: Taste and add more salt if needed.

Southern Baked Beans Recipe

(16-ounce cans) navy beans

bacon (diced)

garlic (minced)

½ medium sweet onion (diced)

¼ cup unsulphured molasses

bacon (halved)

Preheat oven to 325º F.

Pour navy beans into medium stockpot.

In a medium skillet, add diced bacon, onion, and garlic. Cook until bacon is crisp and onion is tender. Remove from heat and add to navy beans.

Add Worcestershire sauce, molasses, brown sugar, ketchup, and yellow mustard. Stir to combine well. Pour into deep dish you plan to serve from or leave in stockpot. Top with bacon and sprinkle top with brown sugar.

Place in oven and bake 45 minutes. Increase temperature to 425º F for 10 minutes to crisp bacon. Remove from oven and allow to rest about 5 minutes before serving.

Add navy beans to a slow cooker.

Cook bacon, onion, and garlic in a medium skillet until the bacon is crisp and the onion and garlic are tender. Add to the navy beans in the slow cooker.

Add Worcestershire sauce, molasses, brown sugar, ketchup, and yellow mustard. Stir to combine well.

Cook on LOW setting for 6 to 7 hours or HIGH setting for 3 to 4 hours. If the baked beans are too thin, remove the lid to the slow cooker for the last 30 to 45 minutes of cook time until the beans have thickened to desired consistency. If too thick, stir in water a tablespoon at a time until it reaches the desired consistency. Top with optional baked bacon for serving.

Add all beans and the onions to a large pot. In a bowl whisk together mustard, maple syrup, liquid smoke, salt, garlic, and ketchup. Add to pot and stir to combine.

Cook covered over medium-high heat, stirring periodically, for 30 minutes. Stir in bacon. Serve with green onions if desired.

Heat oil over high heat (can skip oil if bacon is super fatty). Add bacon and cook for 2 minutes.

Add onion and garlic. Cook for 3 minutes until onion and bacon are golden.

Add remaining ingredients. Stir, bring to simmer, then place lid on.

Then either turn down heat to medium low (simmering gently) and cook on the stove for 1 hour, stirring every now and then so the bottom doesn&#039;t catch. OR bake at 160°C/325°F for 60 minutes.

SLOW COOKER option: Reduce water to 1/4 cup, transfer to slow cooker and cook for 6 hours on low. 

The sauce should be thickened (cook with lid off for a bit if not thick enough) and glossy. Adjust salt and pepper to taste at the end. See notes for serving suggestions!

Boston Baked Beans Recipe - Slow Cooker or Dutch Oven

Soak the Beans:Soaking the beans is optimal for a shortened cooking time. Starting with un-soaked beans adds an additional 4-6 hours to the slow cook time. This increases the cooking time from 5 - 6 hours to about 10 - 12 hours. [See Note 1]Overnight soak - Place beans in a large bowl and cover with water. The water should reach at least 2 inches over the top of the beans. Allow to soak overnight or at least 8 hours. Retain the soaking liquid for cooking.Quick Soak - For a quick soak, pour the dry beans into a pot and cover the beans with cold water. Place the pan on the stove over medium-high heat and bring to a boil. Once the water boils, turn off the stove, and allow the beans to soak in the hot water for 1.5 hours. Retain the soaking liquid for cooking.Make sure the water level is at least 2 or 3 inches above the bean level to allow for absorption. Reserving the soaking liquid [See Note 8], drain beans in a colander and remove any debris, discolored beans or empty shells. Soaking overnight greatly reduces the cooking time required.

Prepare the Beans in either a crock, Dutch oven, or Slow Cooker insert:Score the salt pork 1/4 inch deep 1 inch apart, and slice into two even pieces. Transfer to the bottom of the cooking vessel.Combine molasses, mustard, brown sugar, salt, pepper, onions and 5 cups soaking liquid. Add the pre-soaked beans. Pour the molasses mixture over beans, stir, and cover. The liquid should cover the beans by 1/2 inch. Add more water if necessary.

By Dutch oven or Clay Beanpot: Preheat oven to 300 degrees F.Transfer beans into the Dutch oven or Clay Bean pot and bake covered until the beans are tender and the liquid has thickened - about 6 hours. Check the beans every 45 minutes, adding more hot water if necessary to keep beans in broth at all times. For the last 50 to 60 minutes of cooking, uncover the beans to thicken the sauce. At this stage, if you are having hot dogs or sausages with your beans, you can add them into the pot to heat inside with the beans, optional. Once the beans are to your desired tenderness, remove from oven, adjust the seasoning with salt, pepper, and molasses, if necessary. Since Navy beans are relatively high in starch, the sauce will thicken slightly as it cools. If the beans do not thicken enough, See Recipe Note 9 for thickening the beans. If the beans become too thick, add a splash or water of chicken stock and thin to desired consistency.

By Slow Cooker: Soak the beans overnight and drain per step 1. Add all the ingredients into the slow cooker and stir to combine per Recipe Steps 3 &amp; 4. Cover and cook on LOW for 8 to 10 hours or HIGH 5-6 hours, stirring occasionally and checking for tenderness. Taste and adjust molasses, salt, and other seasonings. The sauce will thicken as it cools. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

In a large pot, warm the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and stir for about 5 minutes, until soft. Then add the garlic and cook for 1 more minute.

To the pot, add the molasses, brown sugar, ketchup, salt, apple cider vinegar, vegan Worcestershire sauce and Sriracha hot sauce. Stir well, then add the drained and rinsed beans.

Transfer to a large casserole dish (I used a 9 x 13 inch dish) and cover with foil. Bake for 1 hour. The sauce should thicken a bit.

Keep warm until ready to serve.

Sort through dry beans to remove any stones or hard beans.

Place beans in a large pot, cover with water, soak overnight.

Drain beans, place in a large baking pan.

Peel the outer skin from an onion, dice it up.

Brown ground beef in a skillet placed over medium heat.  Drain off fat.

Chop bacon into small pieces.  Place bacon in skillet, brown lightly.

Add cooked bacon and bacon grease to pan with beans.

Gently stir all ingredients together until mixed well.

Place in pre-heated 300 degree oven, bake covered for 3 hours.

Return beans, uncovered, back to oven and bake about one hour or until beans are tender. Remember, mine took 7 hours total.

I have always understood if salt is added before the beans are tender the salt prevents the beans from becoming tender. I noticed in his recipe that the salt, pepper &amp; ketchup are added toward the very end of cooking.
