In a large pot over high heat, combine the water and Thai tea leaves. Bring the tea to a boil, then immediately pour the tea through a strainer into a heat-proof vessel to remove the tea leaves. Let the tea cool to room temperature.

Make the simple syrup: in a small pot over high heat, combine the sugar and water. Bring to a boil and cook, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has dissolved and the syrup is clear.

Assemble the tea: divide the ice between 2 glasses, then add simple syrup, tea, and half-and-half.

Craving bubble tea but don’t want to keep spending so much money on it? Making your own is really easy — and much more customizable. You can buy tapioca pearls or boba from Walmart or Amazon (or your local Taiwanese store) then make the tea with a blend of your favorite black tea, sweetener, and half and half or non-dairy substitute. Just add ice and a wide straw, and you can have your favorite treat anytime!

In a medium pot over high heat, combine the water and tea bags. Bring to a boil, then remove the pan from the heat and let the tea cool to room temperature.

Bring a medium pot of water to boil over high heat. Once the water is boiling, add the tapioca pearls and boil until softened, about 20 minutes.

Set the strainer with the pearls over a medium bowl. Add the brown sugar to the strainer and pour the hot water over.

Stir to dissolve the brown sugar. Soak the pearls in brown sugar syrup for 30 minutes, then store the bubbles and syrup separately until ready to serve.

Assemble the tea: Divide the pearls and ice between 2 glasses, then add the brown sugar syrup, tea, and half and half.

Stir with a wide-opening straw, then serve.

I used Chinese breakfast tea for my bubble tea recipe, but any other black tea or strong tasting green teas will also work! For my version of the Jasmine Green Bubble Tea, check out my recipe on Numi&#x27;s blog!

In the recipe, you may notice that I use 8 tea bags to steep in just 4 cups of water. Because the tea will be watered down with milk and ice cubes, you want to start off with a pretty strong tasting tea.

If you enjoy a lot of tapioca pearls in your drinks, I recommend cooking 1 cup of tapioca pearls instead of the 3/4 cup I listed below. You can also halve ingredients for simple syrup if you don&#x27;t think you&#x27;ll need that much.

Cook the tapioca pearls: Bring about 4 cups of water to boil and add the tapioca pearls. Stir the pearls and wait for them to float to the top. Then, cook them for another 5 minutes. Test a pearl to see if it has reached the desired level of softness. Cook the pearls for another few minutes if they are still stiff. Use a slotted spoon to remove the pearls from the hot water. Quickly rinse the pearls with water. Transfer the pearls into a bowl, and mix the pearls with a few tablespoons of simple syrup (to taste).

If you are serving the beverage to guests, have a small pitcher of milk and the jar of simple syrup ready so that each guest can adjust their drinks to their taste. ½ cups water (at room temperature (preferably filtered))

tbsp black tea

boba pearls (or ¾ cup (for generous servings).

brown sugar (or white sugar)

Place the tea leaves in a brewing pot or French press.

Heat the water to 205°F / 96°C (if you don&#039;t have a thermometer to measure the temperature, bring the water to a boil, and then leave it off-heat for about 3 minutes to reach the correct temp.), and THEN measure 2 ¼ cup of water into the brewing pot. Stir once or twice to make sure the tea leaves are saturated with water, then cover the pot and let it sit for no more than 5 - 6 minutes.

Strain the tea leaves, and place the tea in the fridge to cool down.

Hot brewed tea

Place the tea leaves in a French press.

Pour the room temperature water into the French press, and stir the leaves to make sure they are saturated with water.

Press the French press plunger, until the tea leaves are just below the surface of the water, so that they remain submerged in the water.

Let the tea leaves steep for 12 hours, at room temperature. Strain the tea leaves, and place the tea in the fridge to cool down.

Cold brew tea

If you’re using homemade boba pearls, follow the recipe here to cook the boba pearls.

If you’re using quick cook boba pearls, follow the directions on the package to cook the boba pearls.

When the boba pearls have been cooked, place them in cool water to prevent them from sticking to each other.

Boba pearls

Place the sugar and water in a saucepan, and stir to combine. Heat over medium heat while stirring, to melt all of the sugar.

Let the syrup come to a boil. Cook for a further 2 - 3 minutes, until the syrup has thickened up slightly. Let it cool a little bit, while you cook the boba pearls.

Using a slotted spoon, transfer the boba pearls from the cool water into the warm syrup. Stir to coat. Use the pearls while slightly warm.

Sugar syrup (make this before cooking the boba pearls)

In a glass (15 - 16 oz), place some boba pearls, along with some of the sugar syrup.

Pour about 1 cup of brewed tea. The tea should be chilled or at least at room temperature (if you’re adding ice).

Add ice, and top up the glass with milk. Stir to combine. Taste and add more sugar syrup if you&#039;d like the drink sweeter.

Prepare the sugar syrup by boiling a half cup of water in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the brown sugar and stir until completely dissolved. Remove from heat and let it cool down.&nbsp;

Bring 2 cups of water in a boil. Transfer water in a teapot or large cup. Add tea bags and steep as directed in the packet instruction. Steep it longer for a stronger flavor. Chill the tea before using.

Pour the prepared tea into 2&nbsp;tall glasses and add the tapioca pearls. Add milk and syrup as preferred.&nbsp;Add crushed or cubed ice if desired.

How to Make Bubble Tea (Bubble Tea Recipe)

(1 bag) quick-cooking tapioca pearls

Prepare the tea. Bring 6 cups of water to just a boil. Immediately remove from heat and add the tea bags and sugar to the water. Stir well to combine and steep until the water reaches room temperature (see notes).

Prepare the Boba. Approximately 15 minutes before serving, bring a small pot of water to a boil. Add the tapioca pearls (boba) and stir immediately to prevent them from sticking together. Allow them to cook for approximately 5-7 minutes (they should be floating on the top and chewy). Drain and rinse under cold water. Transfer to a clean bowl.

Assemble. Divide the cooked boba between four drinking glasses and top with ice. Pour approximately 1 1/2 cups of black tea into each glass and top with approximately 2-3 tablespoons of milk or half-and-half. Mix well to combine and taste for sweetness. If desired, add additional sugar or sweetener until desired sweetness is reached. Serve with large boba straws or long spoons.

Three Ways to Make Bubble Tea

In a large saucepan, bring 8 cups of water to a boil over high heat. Add the pearls and stir gently until they begin to float to the top.

Turn the heat down to medium and cook for 40 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Remove from heat, cover, and let sit for another 20 minutes.

Drain pearls and transfer to a small bowl. Mix in the honey and fully coat. Set aside for 5 minutes.

Divide the pearls into three tall glasses.

Create any of the following bubble teas:

Plain Bubble Tea: Add tea (or iced tea), ice, and lemon slice.

Milk Bubble Tea: Add tea, milk, and ice.

Fruity Bubble Tea: Blend fruit, milk, honey, and ice in a blender until smooth. Pour into glass.

Sweet, creamy and vibrant, this Ube Milk Tea is a refreshing drink, perfect for summer! Add tapioca pearls to make delicious Ube Bubble Tea!EASY - This recipe is easy to make. However you do require a specialty ingredient - Ube and ube extract which can be found in Asian stores (or Filipino stores)

Ube milk tea (Ube bubble tea)

226 g frozen ube, thawed (1/2 packet, frozen ube)

coconut milk

tbsp vanilla extract

tbsp ube extract

quick cook tapioca pearls

½ cup of the ube base

ice cubes

Honey (optional)

Place all the ingredients (except for the ube extract and evaporated milk) in a saucepan.

Cook the mixture while stirring frequently, and bring it to a boil.

Continue to stir more frequently while cooking, until the mixture becomes thick. The consistency at this stage should be such that when you stir it with a spatula, it should leave a trail in the mixture. Stir in the ube extract at this point.

Add about ½ cup of evaporated milk to get the mixture to a thick but pourable consistency. Add more if needed. Heat through for 1 – 2 minutes.

Place the ube base in a jar and store in the fridge for up to 4 – 5 days.

First, cook the tapioca pearls according to package instructions. If you&#039;d like to make my homemade boba pearls instead, cook them according to the recipe here.

Let the cooked boba pearls soak in cold water (just for a few minutes) until you get the drink ready. Alternatively, mix the drained tapioca pearls with some honey to keep them from sticking to each other.

Place the ube base in a blender, along with the ice and milk. Blend until the mixture is smooth and the base has mixed in well.

Add honey if you like your drink to be sweeter.

Divide the tapioca pearls into two glasses (at least 10 oz capacity).

Optional -  Create some purple streaks with the ube base along the wall of the glass (see pictures in the post). If the ube base is too thick the following day, take a small portion of it and heat it gently in the microwave to make it more spreadable.

Pour the ube milk into the two glasses and serve with boba straws.

To make ube milk tea

This beverage is like a cool breeze on a hot day! So refreshing and more than just a drink – it’s sippable dessert. 

This recipe will yield about 5 servings if portioned into 12 oz. glasses. Simple syrup, butterfly pea flower tea, and sweet coconut cream can all be made one day ahead and chilled, if desired. Boba pearls are best eaten the same day they are made.

Coconut Butterfly Pea Flower Boba Tea

coconut extract

8.8 oz. dried boba tapioca pearls quick cooking (5-minute type)

butterfly pea flower buds

coconut milk (13.5 oz.) (well shaken)

sweetened condensed milk

Make the simple syrup: Combine the water and sugar in a medium microwave-safe bowl. Heat in the microwave for 2 minutes at 100% power. Stir until the sugar is dissolved. If granules remain, heat at full power in 1-minute intervals thereafter until the sugar is melted. Stir in the coconut extract. Transfer the bowl to the refrigerator to cool. If you don’t have a microwave, the simple syrup can be made in a saucepan on the stove top.

Simple syrup

Bring the water to a boil in a large pot over high heat. Add the boba and cook for 7 minutes, stirring gently until the pearls float to the surface of the water. Cover the pot with a lid and cook for 3 more minutes. Remove the pot from the heat source and let it stand for 5 minutes. Drain the boba with a colander, and rinse them in cool water for 20 seconds. Remove the simple syrup from the refrigerator and transfer the boba to the simple syrup. Let stand until completely cool, about 1 hour. Or, speed cooling in the refrigerator, about 30 minutes.

Boba

Place the buds in a large glass bowl or container and pour over the boiling water. Stir the buds around and then let steep uncovered for 10-15 minutes. When the liquid is deep sapphire blue, strain out the buds using a sieve and transfer the tea to the refrigerator to cool.

Butterfly pea flower tea

Combine the coconut milk and sweetened condensed milk in a large glass measure. Whisk until completely smooth.

Sweet coconut cream

Put as little or as much boba as you like in the bottom of a 12-ounce glass (I used about 1/4 cup per glass).  Pour sweet coconut cream about 1/3 of the way up the glass. Add crushed ice and fill to the top. Pour the butterfly pea flower tea over the ice to fill to the top of the glass. Serve immediately with bubble tea straws or with spoons. Stir together before enjoying. Assemble more glasses as needed. Store the boba tea in its syrup in the refrigerator. Also store the coconut cream and butterfly pea flower in the refrigerator until ready to use.

A simple recipe for taro bubble milk using cooked, mashed taro, rather than the powdered artificial taro flavouring.

Real Taro Milk Bubble Tea

Tbsp mashed taro

2-3 Tbsp condensed milk (or sweeten to taste)

tsp vanilla extract

almond milk (or milk of your choice)

potato powder (for colour, optional)

Homemade boba pearls

In a high-powered blender, add the mashed, cooked taro, condensed milk, vanilla extract and almond milk (or milk of your choice), along with the purple sweet potato powder (if using). Blend until smooth.

Add boba pearls to a drinking glass, fill with ice, and pour the blended taro milk over top.

Serve immediately.

This delicious boba tea adds the delicate and sweet aroma of Jasmine, the health benefits of green tea and the chewy goodness of honey boba pearls.    Serve over ice with a reusable boba straw.

Why use plain boba pearls when you can use mango boba in your next mango bubble tea. All you need is 3 ingredients, including fresh mango, to create fruity mango tapioca pearls at home!

How to Make Mango Boba (Mango Tapioca Pearls)

mango coconut milk (or plain milk of your choice)

Extract the flesh from your ripe mango.

Blend the mango into a smooth consistency. It must be as lump-free as possible for smooth tapioca pearls.

Give the mango a taste and if you think it needs it, add the powdered sugar, along with one tablespoon of tapioca starch and the warm water.

Step 1: Prepare the mango

Tapioca starch needs heat to ‘activate’ and work the way we need it to create mango boba pearls. In fact, most ‘mistakes’ made when making homemade tapioca pearls have to do with temperature.You can heat the mango tapioca mixture in one of two ways, microwave or stovetop.Stovetop: Transfer the mixture to a medium pan and heat over medium heat, stirring constantly.Microwave: Heat the mixture in 20-second bursts, stirring in between. You’ll need to do this for around 1:30 minutes or so.
