Recipe video above. The ultimate potato bake!!! Potato + cream + cheese with a hint of garlic and thyme created by the French = pure heaven. Based on Julia Child's Potato Dauphinoise recipe. This is THE perfect make ahead potato dish.

Potatoes au Gratin

(375 ml) cream (, full fate (Note 1))

garlic (, minced)

tbsp (30 grams) unsalted butter (, melted)

1.25 kg / 2.5 lb starchy potatoes (, Russet, Sebago, Maris Piper (Note 2))

salt

tsp pepper

(250 grams) gruyere (or mozzarella) cheese (, grated (Note 3))

thyme

Place butter, cream and garlic in a jug. Mix until combined.

Preheat oven to 350F/180C.

Peel the potatoes and slice them 1/8"/3 mm thick. Or use a slicer!

Spread 1/3 of the potatoes in a baking dish (Note 3), then pour over 1/3 of the cream, scatter with 1/3 of the salt, pepper and thyme. Sprinkle with 3/4 cups cheese.

Repeat for the 2nd and third layer, but do not finish with cheese&nbsp;on the top layer (will add later).

Cover with lid or foil, and bake for 1 hr 15 min or until the potatoes in the middle are soft (use knife to test).

Remove foil, top with cheese. Bake for a further 10 to 15 minutes until golden and bubbly. Stand 5 minutes before serving.

Tip 500ml double cream, 500ml milk and 3 garlic cloves into a large&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/content/five-best-saucepans">saucepan</a> and bring to a simmer.

<a href="https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/content/top-five-paring-knives">Slice</a> 8 large potatoes very finely, about 3-4mm, add them to the cream and simmer for 3 mins until just cooked.

Gently stir to separate the potato and stop it sinking and catching on the bottom of the pan.

Remove the potatoes with a slotted spoon and place in a wide shallow&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/review/test-five-best-roasting-tins">ovenproof dish</a>&nbsp;so that they are about 5cm in depth.

Pour over the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/content/top-five-garlic-gadgets">garlic</a>&nbsp;infused cream (discarding the garlic) &ndash; just enough to seep through the layers and leave a little moisture on the surface.

Scatter over 100g grated gruyère cheese, if using, then bake for 30 mins until the potatoes are soft and browned &ndash; increase the heat for 5 mins if not brown enough.

Vegan Scalloped Potatoes

You can watch the video in the post for visual instructions.Soak cashews in boiling water for about 15 minutes, then drain.

Meanwhile, peel potatoes and slice them thinly (about 1/8 inch thick). You will need 3 pounds (1.4 kg) of peeled potatoes for this recipe. Also, peel the onion and slice it thinly.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (ca. 204 °C) and grease a 9×13 inch (23x33 cm) baking dish. Set aside.

To make the cashew sauce, add all sauce ingredients to a blender. Blend on high for about one to two minutes or until completely smooth. The sauce will be very thin at first but don&#039;t worry as it will thicken up while baking. Taste the sauce and add more salt/pepper/spices if needed.

Transfer half of the potatoes to the prepared baking dish and pour half of the sauce on top.

Spread the sliced onion on top and layer the remaining potatoes over the onion. Pour the remaining sauce in the baking dish.

Bake for about 60-70 minutes. The baking time depends on the thickness of the sliced potatoes. The potatoes should be fork-tender and golden brown.

Let cool for about 5-10 minutes, then garnish with fresh parsley or chives. Enjoy!

Garlic mash potato bake

Cook the potatoes in a large pan of water for 15 mins or until soft. Drain well. Place the pan back on the heat. Melt a little butter and cook the garlic for 1 min to soften, then stir in the cream or milk and heat through. Return the potatoes to the pan and mash until smooth.

Heat oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Spoon the mixture into a 20 x 30cm baking dish. Sprinkle the breadcrumbs, cheese and thyme over the top. Can be made up to this point the day before and stored in the fridge or frozen for up to 1 month. Cook for 15 mins until the crumbs are crisp and the cheese has melted. To cook from frozen, simply cook for 1 hr 10 mins.

It only takes 5-ingredients to whip up this next-level potato bake. With layers of tender potato slices, oozing mozzarella, BBQ chicken and spinach doused in a creamy sauce (with a hint of mustard), midweek dinners don't get much better than this! This super easy potato bake can also be served as a side dish (just leave the chicken out).
